Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa is looking back with a lot of love at the role that helped shape him long before Aquaman made him a global star.

While promoting his upcoming film The Wrecking Crew, the 46-year-old actor reflected on his time playing Ronon Dex on the sci-fi series Stargate Atlantis, which he joined in 2004 while still in his 20s. In an interview with MovieZine, Momoa described the experience as nothing short of a real-world education.

Stargate Atlantis was like going to college, to tell you the truth,” he said. “It was four years of my life. You do 22 episodes, which takes about nine months out of the year, and you’re pretty much all in.”

The pace was intense, too. Each episode was filmed in roughly a week and a half, giving Momoa an up-close look at how fast television production can move. “You’re really seeing how everything works,” he explained. “It moves very quickly.”

The show also played a huge role in shaping Momoa as an action star. With demanding stunt work and hands-on training, he says those years were when he truly found his footing.

“As far as action goes, that was when I was really cutting my teeth,” Momoa shared. He praised the stunt coordinators and performers, adding that he’s still close friends with some of the stunt team in Canada to this day.

Beyond the physical training, Momoa said the series gave him room to experiment, grow, and even make mistakes without the overwhelming pressure that often comes with big-budget films.

“The weight of responsibility wasn’t as hard as maybe a big movie,” he said. “It was a fundamental and beautiful time in my life where I got to learn a bunch of stuff, draw inspiration from samurai films and things I loved as a kid, and just grow. I had a great time.”

Momoa also took a moment to thank the show’s devoted fans, who have supported him throughout his career. “They’ve stood with me through everything,” he said. “I really respect them and love them and appreciate them.”

Stargate Atlantis aired for five seasons from 2004 to 2009, and for Momoa, it remains a defining chapter—one that laid the foundation for everything that came after.
